Black Tourmaline Obelisk Point – Natural Schorl Crystal

This Black Tourmaline Obelisk Point is a genuine natural schorl specimen, expertly shaped and polished into a classic obelisk form. The photograph shows the exact piece you will receive, carefully selected for its deep black colour, structural definition, and overall finish. Full sizing details are available in the listing photos. Your crystal includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming it as an authentic natural mineral specimen.

Mineral Type & Crystal Structure

Black Tourmaline is the variety known as schorl, a complex boron silicate mineral with the general formula NaFe₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄. It belongs to the tourmaline group and crystallises in the trigonal crystal system.

Schorl typically forms elongated prismatic crystals with vertically striated surfaces. Its opaque black colour is caused primarily by its high iron content. Tourmaline is known for its complex chemical composition and wide range of colours across the species, though schorl remains the most common variety.

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 7–7.5, black tourmaline is relatively durable and suitable for carving and polishing while retaining crisp edges and structural integrity.

Obelisk Shape & Craftsmanship

This specimen has been carved into a four-sided obelisk with a defined pointed apex and flat base for stable display. The obelisk form enhances the stone’s bold, solid appearance while echoing the vertical habit typical of natural tourmaline crystals.

The polished surfaces highlight subtle internal textures and natural structural lines inherited from the mineral’s original crystal growth. While schorl is opaque, faint variations in tone and internal structure may be visible under strong lighting.

Each obelisk is unique, reflecting natural growth patterns, mineral density variations, and subtle surface characteristics.

Geological Formation

Black tourmaline commonly forms in igneous and metamorphic environments, particularly within granite pegmatites and high-temperature hydrothermal veins. Pegmatites are coarse-grained igneous rocks that allow large mineral crystals to develop due to slow cooling and high volatile content.

Schorl may occur alongside quartz, feldspar, mica, lepidolite, and other tourmaline varieties. Significant deposits are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and parts of Africa and the United States.

Its formation involves boron-rich fluids interacting with surrounding rocks during crystallisation, contributing to the mineral’s complex chemistry.

Physical & Visual Characteristics

Black tourmaline is opaque with a vitreous to slightly resinous lustre when polished. The obelisk shape enhances its clean geometric presence, creating a bold and minimalist aesthetic suitable for display.

Natural inclusions, internal fractures, or faint surface irregularities may be present and are typical of authentic schorl specimens.

Traditional & Cultural Associations

Historically, tourmaline has been used in jewellery and decorative carvings. In spiritual traditions, black tourmaline is sometimes symbolically associated with protection and grounding. These associations are cultural and belief-based rather than scientific.

Ideal for Collectors & Display

This Black Tourmaline Obelisk Point makes a striking addition to any mineral collection or interior décor setting. Its deep black tone pairs well with lighter stones and metallic accents, creating strong visual contrast.

You will receive the exact specimen shown in the photographs, securely packaged and presented with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee card. A genuine black tourmaline schorl obelisk, selected for quality, structure, and craftsmanship.
