Magnetite is one of the main iron ores, and is a member of the Spinel group. It is the most magnetic of all the naturally occurring minerals on Earth, and is known as a ferromagnetic. This means it is attracted to a magnet, but can also be magnetized to become a permanent magnet itself. Magnetite can be found naturally magnetized, these pieces go by the name Lodestone. Lodestone specimens rarely have a strong magnetic pull, so may not pick up large metal objects, or stick to a fridge etc, but they do attract small iron filings and such, and this was how ancient people first noticed the property of magnetism.
