Pyrite, also known as Iron Pyrite or more commonly Fool’s Gold, is an iron sulfide mineral with the chemical formula FeS₂. Its brilliant metallic lustre and striking brass-yellow colour give it a strong resemblance to gold, which led to its nickname. Despite its look, Pyrite has its own unique significance both geologically and historically.

Geological Information:

  • Mineral Type: Iron Sulfide (FeS₂)
  • Crystal System: Isometric (cubic)
  • Hardness: 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale
  • Lustre: Metallic
  • Colour: Pale brass-yellow with a golden sheen
  • Formation: Pyrite commonly forms in hydrothermal veins, sedimentary rock layers, and metamorphic deposits. Its cubic and pyritohedral crystal habits are among the most recognised shapes in the mineral world.

Peruvian Pyrite specimens are especially prized due to their high-quality crystal formation, sharp cubic structures, and vibrant metallic lustre. These specimens are often collected as display pieces and used in crystal healing for their reputed energetic and protective properties.

Historical & Cultural Significance: Pyrite has been used since ancient times for decorative purposes and even to strike fire due to its spark-producing capability. Its name originates from the Greek word pyr, meaning “fire”. In metaphysical beliefs, Pyrite is considered a stone of protection, shielding its owner from negative energies and enhancing vitality and willpower.
