Aura Quartz begins as quartz, a silicon dioxide mineral with the chemical formula SiO2. Quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system and commonly forms six-sided prismatic crystals with pointed terminations when it grows into open cavities or veins. In cluster form, multiple quartz crystals grow together from a shared base, creating an attractive arrangement of points, smaller secondary crystals, intergrown prisms, and natural crystal faces.

The iridescent surface of Aura Quartz is produced by bonding quartz with a very thin layer of metal vapour under controlled conditions.
