Description

Aragonite “Sputnik” Starburst Cluster – Natural Moroccan Mineral Specimen

This Aragonite “Sputnik” Cluster is a striking natural mineral specimen from Morocco, celebrated for its dramatic radiating crystal formation. Often referred to as “Sputnik” aragonite due to its spherical, starburst appearance, this piece displays multiple acicular crystal sprays that radiate outward in three-dimensional clusters, creating a bold and sculptural display.

You will receive the exact specimen shown in the photographs. The crystal has been carefully selected for its structure, overall balance, and visual impact. Full sizing is available in the listing photos. This is a genuine mineral specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card.

Mineral Type & Crystal Structure

Aragonite is a naturally occurring polymorph of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), sharing the same chemical composition as calcite but forming in a different crystal system. Unlike calcite, which crystallises in the trigonal system, aragonite forms in the orthorhombic crystal system. This structural difference gives rise to its distinctive needle-like (acicular) crystals and radial growth habits.

The “Sputnik” formation is created when elongated aragonite crystals grow outward from a central point, forming spherical or hemispherical clusters. These radiating sprays create a textured, spiky surface that catches light from multiple angles, enhancing depth and dimension.

Aragonite typically forms in sedimentary and low-temperature hydrothermal environments. Moroccan deposits are particularly well known among collectors for producing exceptional starburst clusters with strong form and warm natural tones.

Colour, Texture & Visual Appeal

Moroccan Aragonite Sputnik clusters are commonly found in earthy hues ranging from sandy beige and soft caramel to warm brown tones. The colour is often influenced by trace elements and natural inclusions present during formation. The crystal surfaces may show a silky to slightly vitreous lustre, especially along the fine crystal terminations.

The radiating growth pattern creates a highly tactile, sculptural appearance, making each cluster unique. No two starburst formations are identical, adding to the individuality and collectable appeal of the piece.

Geological Origin – Morocco

Morocco is internationally recognised as a significant source of high-quality mineral specimens. Aragonite from this region forms within sedimentary host rock, often in cavities where mineral-rich fluids allow crystals to develop freely in open space. This environment enables the formation of the dramatic radial sprays characteristic of “Sputnik” clusters.

Moroccan aragonite is highly regarded in the mineral collecting community due to the clarity of crystal habit, strong symmetry, and well-defined acicular growth.

Collecting, Display & Gifting

This Aragonite Sputnik Cluster is ideal for mineral collectors, crystal enthusiasts, geology students, and those who appreciate natural earth-formed structures. Its bold starburst form makes it a distinctive shelf display, cabinet specimen, or desk feature.

Aragonite is traditionally associated in spiritual contexts with grounding and connection to the earth; such perspectives are based on historical and cultural belief systems rather than scientific claims.

Whether purchased as a collector’s mineral, a decorative natural history piece, or a thoughtful gift, this specimen offers authentic geological character and strong visual presence.

  1. Chris D

A tiny, but gorgeous addition to my collection. I ordered a “Selected” piece which was exactly as advertised (which includes the stated size), a lovely lustre on this piece which makes it very photogenic. My only suggestion for UKGE would be a physically larger sputniks option in red. I’d certainly consider purchasing a bigger brother companion for this piece!

  2. Bethany Short (verified owner)

Absolutely stunning piece. It’s a beautiful mix of having rough, rocky parts in the centre and shiny, myre “crystal-like” see through parts in the pieces that stick out. It’s a really good addition to any collection and it’s so unique and pretty
