Description

Natural Agate Slice (2–2.5″) – Genuine Banded Chalcedony Quartz

This beautiful Natural Agate Slice measures approximately 2–2.5 inches and showcases the intricate banding and layered structure that make agate one of the most admired varieties of chalcedony. Expertly cut and polished to reveal its internal patterns, this slice highlights the natural beauty formed over millions of years within volcanic rock cavities.

The photographs show the actual specimen you will receive, allowing you to see the exact banding, colour transitions, crystalline pockets, and edge shape. Please refer to the images for full sizing and proportions.

This crystal is a genuine specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming its natural origin.

Mineral Species & Scientific Classification

Agate is a variety of chalcedony, which itself belongs to the quartz family.

Scientific details:

  • Mineral Name: Agate

  • Variety of: Chalcedony (Microcrystalline Quartz)

  • Chemical Formula: SiO₂ (Silicon Dioxide)

  • Mineral Group: Tectosilicates

  • Crystal System: Trigonal (microcrystalline structure)

  • Hardness: 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale

  • Lustre: Waxy to vitreous when polished

  • Transparency: Translucent to semi-opaque

  • Fracture: Conchoidal

  • Cleavage: None

Unlike large quartz crystals, agate is composed of microscopic interlocking quartz fibres, giving it a smooth texture and distinctive banded appearance.

Geological Formation & Natural Origins

Agate forms primarily within volcanic environments. When gas bubbles become trapped in cooling lava, they create cavities. Silica-rich groundwater later flows into these voids, depositing layer upon layer of microcrystalline quartz.

Over long geological timescales, these layers build up in rhythmic bands, often influenced by changes in mineral content, temperature, and pressure. Iron, manganese, and other trace elements can contribute to colour variations within the bands.

Once fully mineralised, the surrounding rock may erode away, leaving agate nodules that can be cut into slices to reveal their internal structure.

Structure, Banding & Visual Characteristics

This 2–2.5 inch agate slice displays classic banded formations typical of natural chalcedony. Depending on the specimen, you may observe:

  • Concentric or fortification-style banding

  • Translucent zones that allow light to pass through

  • Subtle crystalline centres or druzy pockets

  • Natural colour layering ranging from greys and whites to earth tones

  • A polished face enhancing pattern clarity

  • A natural outer edge retaining part of the original nodule surface

Each slice is entirely unique, with no two patterns ever identical due to the natural formation process.

Display, Collecting & Decorative Appeal

Agate slices are highly sought after for:

  • Mineral and crystal collections

  • Desk and shelf display pieces

  • Interior décor accents

  • Educational geology examples

  • Unique natural gifts

In various cultural traditions, agate has been historically associated with symbolic balance and grounding themes; these associations are cultural rather than scientific. Today, agate is widely appreciated for its geological story, durability, and striking natural patterns.
