Geological Formation & Mineral Composition

Tiger Eye, also written as Tiger’s Eye, is a chatoyant variety of quartz (SiO₂) belonging to the quartz family within the order Silicales. It forms through a fascinating geological process known as pseudomorphism, where quartz gradually replaces fibrous crocidolite (a blue asbestos mineral belonging to the riebeckite group) while preserving its original fibrous structure.

During this transformation, silica-rich fluids infiltrate crocidolite-bearing rock, often in banded iron formations or metamorphosed sedimentary deposits. Over time, the crocidolite fibres are replaced molecule by molecule by microcrystalline quartz, while iron oxide minerals such as limonite contribute to the golden brown colouration.

This replacement process typically occurs in metamorphic environments, where heat and pressure alter iron-rich sedimentary rocks. Many commercial deposits are associated with Precambrian geological formations, often more than 1.8 billion years old. The resulting material retains the parallel fibrous texture of the original mineral, producing the distinctive chatoyant optical effect.

Optical Phenomenon & Notable Characteristics

The most celebrated feature of Tiger Eye is its chatoyancy, an optical phenomenon that produces a moving band of light across the surface when the stone is rotated. This effect occurs because light reflects off the aligned fibrous structures preserved within the quartz.

Notable characteristics of this 8mm Tiger Eye bracelet include:

  • Rich golden to deep brown banding

  • Silky, reflective chatoyant sheen

  • Parallel fibrous internal structure

  • Opaque to slightly translucent edges

  • Mohs hardness of 7, suitable for everyday jewellery

The spherical 8mm bead cut enhances the shifting light effect, allowing the chatoyant band to move dynamically across each bead. Natural colour zoning and band intensity variations make every bracelet unique.

Geological Environment & Mineral Transformation

Tiger Eye originates in iron-rich sedimentary sequences that later undergo regional metamorphism. These rocks may include banded iron formations composed primarily of iron oxides and silica layers. During metamorphism and subsequent silica replacement, crocidolite fibres are preserved in structure but altered in composition, resulting in quartz with embedded fibrous inclusions.

The transformation reflects a combination of sedimentary deposition, chemical replacement, and metamorphic alteration, making Tiger Eye an excellent example of mineralogical evolution through geological processes.

Jewellery Appeal & Everyday Wear

The 8mm bead size offers a confident and versatile aesthetic, suitable for stacking or wearing alone. Its warm golden hues pair effortlessly with both casual and formal styles. The stretch design provides comfort and flexibility for daily wear.

Tiger Eye has long been valued in gemstone traditions for its association with strength and focus, contributing to its enduring popularity in men’s and women’s jewellery collections alike.

Authenticity & Presentation

This bracelet is made from genuine natural Tiger Eye quartz. It includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card confirming the authenticity of the specimen.
