This is a small Mosasaur Tooth in a Composite Block.

What is a composite?
The fossils are Genuine but the matrix is not. There is very good scientific reason for this being done.
Most fossils come from a sandy bed in Morocco. Fossils extracted from this bed are fragile, and would never come in a hard matrix, they can crumble apart, the fossils are found together but naturally the teeth and jaw sections come away.
Anyone who works with restoring, preserving and prepping fossils, will understand the need to support fragile fossils. The Mosasaur Jaws for instance would simply break up, fall apart and crumble without a hard base. As part of the preparing and preservation process, sand is mixed with a hardening liquid and the jaws reassembled as they would have been naturally found.

Mosasaurs were large marine reptiles that were well-adapted to living in the warm, shallow, epicontinental seas prevalent during the late Cretaceous Period, between 145.5 and 65.5 million years ago. They breathed air & were powerful swimmers making them so well adapted to this environment that they gave birth to live young, rather than return to the shore to lay eggs, as sea turtles do. Mosasaurs had many qualities of a modern day snake, they had two rows of teeth in their upper jaw, the main set, and a smaller set toward the rear & centre of their mouths.
