Description
Lodestones are naturally magnetized pieces of the mineral magnetite. They are naturally occurring magnets, which can attract iron. The property of magnetism was first discovered in antiquity through lodestones.
Magnetite is one of the main iron ores, and is a member of the Spinel group. It is the most magnetic of all the naturally occurring minerals on Earth, and is known as ferromagnetic, which means it is attracted to a magnet.
In nature they can be found covered in small pieces of iron filings that they have attracted, and this was how ancient people first noticed the property of magnetism. The process by which Lodestone is created is an open question in geology, the leading theory is that Lodestones are magnetized by the strong magnetic fields surrounding lightning bolts. This is supported by the observation that they are mostly found near the surface of the Earth, rather than buried at great depth.
All of our Minerals are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authentication
